Common Shadowsocks Errors on Windows (v2rayN) and How to Fix Them
1. Error: "Failed to Connect to Server" or "Server Unreachable" or "Connection Timed Out"
- The Shadowsocks server is offline or the address/port is wrong. - A firewall/NAT blocks the connection or DNS fails to resolve the server.
Solution :- Ensure the server is online and the address/port is correct. - Check your internet and firewall or NAT settings. - Verify DNS resolution of the server. - If it persists, contact ChitaVPN support.
2. Error: "Authentication Failed"
- The Shadowsocks password is incorrect or doesn’t match the server’s config. - A mismatch in encryption method can also cause it.
Solution :- Double-check your password and encryption method in v2rayN. - If you still can’t connect, contact ChitaVPN support.
3. Error: "Proxy Connection Failed"
- Incorrect proxy settings (address, port, encryption), or the server isn’t accepting proxy connections.
Solution :- Verify the Shadowsocks settings in v2rayN. - Disable proxy features if you’re not using them. - If the error continues, contact ChitaVPN support.
4. Error: "Certificate Verification Failed"
- If using a plugin that requires TLS, the certificate is invalid, expired, or missing.
Solution :- Install or trust the server’s certificate if it’s self-signed. - Make sure the certificate is valid and not expired. - If unsure, contact ChitaVPN support.
5. Error: "Port in Use"
- The same local port is occupied by another app.
Solution :- Use netstat (e.g., netstat -ano) to see which process is using the port. - Close the conflicting app or change the port in v2rayN. - If stuck, contact ChitaVPN support.
6. Error: "Bind Failed: Access is denied"
- v2rayN doesn’t have admin rights to bind a port, or firewall software is blocking it.
Solution :- Run v2rayN as Administrator. - Temporarily disable firewall/antivirus or add an exception. - If the issue remains, contact ChitaVPN support.
7. Error: "Shadowsocks Error: Unsupported Cipher"
- The encryption method on the server isn’t supported by v2rayN.
Solution :- Match the encryption method in v2rayN with the server (e.g., AES-256-GCM). - If the server uses a rare cipher, switch to a common one. - For further help, contact ChitaVPN support.
8. Error: "Cannot Resolve Hostname"
- v2rayN can’t resolve the server domain.
Solution :- Check your DNS settings or try a different DNS server. - Test the domain with ping or nslookup. - If unresolved, contact ChitaVPN support.
